Centerpoint Road Overpass

Hays County, in coordination with the City of San Marcos, is advancing plans for an overpass over the Union Pacific Railroad on Centerpoint Road while widening the roadway. The project aims to reduce train-related traffic delays, improve emergency response, and provide a safer connection between I-35 and Hunter Road for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians as San Marcos and western Hays County continue to grow.
 

The county completed a preliminary engineering report and schematic design for the overpass, which helped identify the project cost and next steps. Certificates of Obligation funded design, right-of-way acquisition, and utility coordination but did not include construction funding.
 

In 2026, the county applied for and was awarded a $39.2 million federal grant from the Federal Railroad Administration for construction of a grade separation overpass at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing on Centerpoint Road.The grant covers 80% of the estimated $49 million Centerpoint Road Overpass construction cost, with the remaining $9.8 million funded jointly by Hays County and Union Pacific Railroad to reduce train-related delays and improve safety.
